The University of NSW has finished 6th in the 2011 Veolia World Solar Challenge. The result also gave them the satisfaction of being the first Australian team across the finishing line just beating strong rival Aurora by 7 minutes. Barton Mawer started in the car out of Darwin, racing hard with the big international teams by moving into second in the opening section. The race proved more of a battle than normal with teams facing bushfires, dust storms and torrential rain.
The team encountered a few technical problems along the way but were able to sort them out despite the trying conditions. The race to Adelaide covers 3000 km and travels through Katherine, Tennant creek, Alice Springs, Coober Pedy and Port Augusta. UNSW covered the race in a total of 48 hours 38mins driving time and an average of 61.65km/hr between the three nominated drivers. “I have raced in some of the biggest circuit endurance races around the world, but this race certainly gives a new definition to the term challenge” explained a relieved Barton as the team participated in the traditional swim in the fountain in Victoria Square in Adelaide. |
Thursday, 09 June 2011 02:27 |
|
Barton received a late call up to race at the Bathurst 12 hour on 6th February racing for the familiar Wall racing team. Barton joined David Wall and Greg Crick in the mighty Porsche Cup S. The drive became available when Des Wall broke his wrist at work just weeks before the race. “It is not how I would like to get a drive as Des is a family friend. However the team know me well and we were confident going into the race”. This race was a chance for Barton’s partners to have an international presence early in the season. I.Contract and Powrgard were joined for the first time by Royale Limousines. The Bathurst 12 hour race has grown from the production cars to include the GT cars this year. The rise in the profile of the race was shown with two works Audi R8 LMS GTS cars from Europe with Craig Lowndes leading the all Australian entry. Along with two Ferrari 430’s, A Mosler and a host of Porsches the race was going to be exciting.
