Barton was bred into a motor racing environment - his ambition was always to be a professional racing driver. From the age of twelve he was involved in the family business, Mawer Engineering, which stimulated his passion for the technical side of the sport. His father, David, is well known in the Australian motor racing industry as the designer and builder of the Mawer Formula Ford in the 1970’s. Barton began his open wheeler career by rebuilding a written-off Mawer which had previously won two Australian Formula Ford championships. He contested the Historic Formula Ford Championship in that car and, in the process, quickly developed the foundations of his craft. Barton was mentored by life-long friend and world-renowned race engineer, Bruce Cary, who engineered Australia ’s David Brabham to the British Formula 3 championship in 1989. Bruce’s expertise and experience in Formula 3 was second to none. The close working relationship they shared was a catalyst in propelling Barton into a successful career in international motor sport. Barton’s dedication, skill and personable nature have since established him as a highly respected and popular figure within the motorsport community on both sides of the world.

The Australian Motorsport Foundation was established in 2001 as an initiative of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport to nurture and support Australia's talented young motor sport competitors, both financially and personally, and to assist them in reaching their full potential in international competition. Barton was selected as a beneficiary in 2005 and will again be supported in his 2006 campaign.
